- Theater: The Tempest
When: June 9-11, 15-17, 7:30pmWhere: Central Park, Northfield, MN 55057, USA (map)Description: William Shakespeare’s enchanting story of how love and forgiveness can conquer fear and power. Filled with humor, the supernatural and intrigue, this Northfield Arts Guild production “explores the relationship between the natural and supernatural,” says Director Deon Haider. “Our stage will incorporate both natural and manmade elements to create a unique island setting in Central Park.” The Tempest sets the stage for a betrayed magician bent on revenge. When a particular vessel appears on the horizon of his strange island, Prospero deliberately conjures up a violent storm to meet the ship that carries the men who wronged him. This magical tempest wrecks the ship and washes a cast of colorful characters to the island where nothing is as it seems. Along the tempestuous journey, characters lust for power, unleash powerful passions and strive to overcome despair. Delightful magic, young romance and physical comedy offset the darkness in Shakespeare’s farewell to the stage. Featuring Brendon Etter as Prospero and Esme’ Elzi as Prospero’s daughter, Miranda, a father-daughter duo in real life. The role of Prospero’s mysterious sprite, Ariel, will be played by two actors: Birch Carlson and Taylor Heitman. The cast also includes Jonathan Larson as Caliban, Kevin Chapman as Antonio, Charlie Black as Gonzalo, Larry Tolle as Sebastian, Sean Meagher as Ferdinand, Pauline Jennings as Trinculo, Jerry Fox as Stephano, Dylan Nuebel as Adrian, Russ Paladin as Francisco and Peter Webb as the Boatswain. The Spirits of the Island are played by Carson Bechtel, Josie Hauck, Bronwyn McDermott, and Audrey Sorenmann. The June 9 performance will be preceded by an opening night reception, and the June 11 performance will have a pre-show discussion at 7pm.
